Mathematical comparison of homologous and homoeologous chromosome configurations and the mode of action of the genes regulating pairing in wheat.

چکیده

Analyses of frequencies of chromosome configurations in wheat and wheat hybrids are extended to include data from hybrids of three chromosome-pairing mutants of wheat with Aegilops variabilis and from autotetraploid Triticum monococcum. These data confirm and extend the theory proposed by Driscoll, Bielig and Darvey (1979). Homoeologous and homologous chromosome pairing are fundamentally identical. The mode of action of the genes regulating pairing in wheat involves either physical alteration in the chromosomes themselves or changes in an enzyme system that monitors pairing.

Substitution of rye chromosome 5r for chromosome 5b of wheat and its effect on chromosome pairing.

HEXAPLOID wheat normally exhibits homologous pairing, forming only bivalents at meiosis. However, in the absence of chromosome 5B, homoeologous as well as homologous pairing occurs ( SEARS and OKAMOTO 1958; RILEY and CHAPMAN 1958; RILEY and KEMPANNA 1963). In 5Bdeficient hybrids between wheat and related genera, the level of chromosome pairing is increaesd (RILEY, CHAPMAN and KIMBER 1959). In w...

A DNA fragment mapped within the submicroscopic deletion of Ph1, a chromosome pairing regulator gene in polyploid wheat.

Bread wheat is an allohexaploid consisting of three genetically related (homoeologous) genomes. The homoeologous chromosomes are capable of pairing but strict homologous pairing is observed at metaphase 1. The diploid-like pairing is regulated predominantly by Ph1, a gene mapped on long arm of chromosome 5B. We report direct evidence that a mutant of the gene (ph1b) arose from a submicroscopic ...

Effect of the pairing gene Ph1 on centromere misdivision in common wheat.

The cytologically diploid-like meiotic behavior of hexaploid wheat (i.e., exclusive bivalent pairing of homologues) is largely controlled by the pairing homoeologous gene Ph1. This gene suppresses pairing between homoeologous (partially homologous) chromosomes of the three closely related genomes that compose the hexaploid wheat complement. It has been previously proposed that Ph1 regulates mei...

Effect of a rye B chromosome and its segments on homoeologous pairing in hybrids between common wheat and Aegilops variabilis.

Rye B chromosomes, which are supernumerary chromosomes dispensable for the host but increase in number by non-disjunction after meiosis, have been reported to affect meiotic homoeologous pairing in wheat-rye hybrids. The effect of a rye B chromosome (B) and its segments (B-9 and B-10) on homoeologous pairing was studied in hybrids between common wheat (2n=42) and Aegilops variabilis (2n=28), wi...

The influence of rye cytoplasm on meiotic stability of tetraploid Secalotriticum.

Chromosome pairing in tetraploid Secalotriticum was analysed. In the studied plants wheat chromosomes in PMCs during metaphase I showed a higher degree of pairing, in comparison to the rye genome. This is reflected in a very low frequency of univalents and a higher frequency of ring bivalents. The occurrence of wheat univalents was dependent on wheat mixogenome. In plants with an unstabilized f...
